本书在勒菲弗尔的翻译改写理论指导下，对比了（红楼梦）的霍克斯和杨宪益译本，系统分析了霍克斯译本中的改写现象。全书共分四章，首先系统地阐述了翻译与文化的关系；其次从格律出发，分析了通过韵式转化和使用轻重读来重建音韵美的可行性：然后从字、词、句三个方面分析了如何通过改写重建原文的形式美：最后重点论述了通过改写是否能够重现原文的婉约美以及意境深远。本书研究发现改写是翻译重建文本美学价值的有效策略之一，霍克斯译本也因此在海外市场取得成功。本书基于作者的博士论文，探讨了中国古典文学作品的英译问题，以期为翻译专业的学者及学习者提供参考。
