语音学是一门研究言语过程的学科，因此它是一门涉及语言学、医学生理、声学、计算机科学、心理学的边缘性科学。语音学主要借助各类仪器(包括计算机)来研究语音的产生、语音信号的自然属性，所以早期称它为“仪器语音学”和“实验语音学”。由于语音学的本质是实验的，因此上个世纪70年代后就逐渐以“语音学”取代“仪器语音学”或“实验语音学”的名称了。语音学主要研究语音的产生、传递和接收过程中的特性及其变化规律。本书收录的文章基本涵盖了中国现代语音学研究的各个相关领域，也反映了中国目前语音学的研究水平和研究队伍。
