本书是为中石油油田职工出国英语考试而编写的系列培训教材之一。《英语阅读理解》分册共分为五篇：第一篇是方法篇，在第二版的基础上，增补了一些阅读方法和技巧的讲解，为全面提高学习者的阅读能力和阅读技巧提供指导。第二篇是基础训练篇，包括20套比较简单的托福阅读考试模拟测试题，为学习者提供基础阅读训练。第三篇是提高训练篇，包括26套较难的托福阅读考试模拟测试题，为学习者进一步提高阅读水平提供材料。第四篇是冲刺训练篇，包括46篇最新的托福考试阅读真题及模拟题，增补了第二版中缺乏的较新的阅读资料，增强了阅读材料的时效性，有利于学习者进一步拔高英语阅读水平。第五篇是资料篇，为学习者归纳总结了托福阅读中常见的重要词汇、短语等，有利于学习者进一步提升自己的阅读基础知识。
本书可以在短时间内迅速提高出国人员的英语阅读能力，使其能够通过中石油的英语考试。因为教材内容不涉及专业的石油工程英语，所以它也适用于自学、高等学校教学，以及目前大部分的出国人员英语考试。
