What is it about some stories that they catch our imaginations so fiercely, for generation after generation? As I write, DreamWorks films is releasing a new version of Wells's The Time Machine. You can bet they wouldn't put a penny into making a major new movie if they didn't think people would flock to watch it. No doubt the story will be changed to soup it all up, and it'll have all the special effects you could ask for-- but the original story was written by H.G. Wells more than a hundred years ago and it reads brilliantly today.
