Walk on and on, Walk
All along
the Great Wall
Because of wolves,
hunters build walls,
Encircling sheep, yet not
deterring wolves.
Weathering wind, rain,
the waves of life's seas,
Hold fast to the Great
Wall as long as can be.
Childhood nursery
rhymes clearly stick in the
mind, each word like a
heavy brick in a wall,
arrayed in the loneliest
crevices of the heart. Not
that easy to move, so
decades later there they
still remain.
The Great Wall
resembles a giant dragon
lying between high
mountains and great
rivers, its head visible yet
its tail hardly seen. Indeed,
its shape is similar to the
image of the Chinese
nation's dragon totem:
long, curved, and
sometimes concealed...
The Great Wall we talk
about today includes the
Great Wall of the Qin
Dynasty (221-207 BC) in
northern China, winding
over 5,000 kilometers from
Gansu Province's Lintao in
the west to Liaoning
Province in the east; the
Great Wall of the Han
Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220),
extending over 10,000
kilometers westward along
the Silk Road from Gansu
Province's Jiuquan through
Dunhuang to Lop Nur in
Xinjiang; and the Great
Wall of the Ming Dynasty
(AD 1368-1644), built over
five or six hundred years.
A lengthy history and vast
breadth have long turned
the Great Wall into a
world-renowned site of
cultural heritage.
What do you think of
when walking along the
Great Wall? If the Great
Wall was truly impregnable
and nomadic peoples were
kept out by this wall, then
China would certainly not
be what it is today, its
territory much smaller than
it is now. In ancient times,
nomadic people often
traversed the Great Wall
and entered China's Central
Plains, turning the Chinese
nation into a large
integrated family of diverse
peoples. The Great Wall
thus became no longer a
bordering frontline against
foreign enemies, but a site
offering gorgeous vistas of
China's lands. Although
there have been countless
cruel wars encompassing
the Great Wall, the Great
Wall has always remained
a fascinating construct of
human creativity from the
perspective of human
wisdom and courage.
The Great Wall has
been compared to an older
brother, with two younger
brothers: one a cultivator,
and the other a nomad.
The Great Wall is like a
chord, sometimes as
exciting as shining spears
and armored horses, other
times as graceful as
melodic music. Nomadism
and cultivation act like two
bowstrings, playing in turn
glory and dreams,
prosperity and decline,
unity and division, life and
death, love and hate...
The beauty of the
Great Wall has reached the
zenith of magnificence and
grandeur. What landscape
designed by humans could
compare with it? What do
you see when walking
along the Great Wall? The
Great Wall meanders
across countless high
mountains, through vast
grasslands and deserts,
connecting hundreds of
passes and thousands of
early warning beacon
towers, with the former
flames of war still
seemingly rising.
Walking along the Great
Wall, ! have seen sunrises
at Jiayuguan Pass, sunsets
at Shanhaiguan Pass, seas
of clouds at Wangjinglou
Tower, snow at Jinshanling,
the cypress of Juyongguan
Pass, the red leaves of
Mutianyu, the strange
peaks of Badaling, and the
blue waves of Laolongtou.
Meng Jiangnu's cries still
whisper faintly in the wind,
but it is hard to say if she
is weeping for her husband
who died during the Great
Wall's construction, or for
the Great Wall crumbling
over the years. Nowadays,
the vast body of the Great
Wall grows old, still being
eroded by time, wind and
rain. Is it tree that the
Great Wall left behind by
the vicissitudes of time
might only be a legend in a
few centuries?
The barren deserts
linked by the Great Wall
continuously extending
westward through our land
make my loving heart
