A brooch is a powerful object. Within the confines of a relatively small composition, it is a complete work of art. Each one has a voice; some have personal meaning, others have artistic merit, and a few have both. I once met a woman who was wear- ing a beautiful art deco brooch. I complimented her, expressing my admiration, and she thanked me graciously. Her smile remained sociable, but guarded. When I then explained my back- ground as a jewelry historian, her expression relaxed and she bloomed with enthusiasm. The brooch was an anniversary gift from her husband. It symbolized the many hours they spent together visiting museums and sifting through flea market stalls.
