本书特点：
主题同步。依据小学阶段应该掌握的若干主题，配合教材单元的主题，围绕颜色、身体部位、动物、数字、玩具、时间、服饰、家庭、朋友、食物、方位、季节、天气、购物、日常活动、家务劳动、文体活动、兴趣爱好、中外节日、交通、旅行、职业等创编阅读材料。选材基于教材，又高于教材，并按材料从易到难的顺序编排。力求遵循听读结合、以读助说、以读促写，为学生语言能力的发展打下良好的基础。
选材丰富。阅读材料题材丰富、图文并茂、内容鲜活、难易适中、风趣幽默、可读性强。文本形式有涉及日常生活、文化习俗、科普知识等内容的叙述文体，如故事、诗歌、对话、小短文等，也有应用文体，如日记、广告、电子邮件、便条、信件、海报等。类型多样，适合师生听读、朗读、阅读、背诵和表演。
