This eclectic approach to buying and styling marked a new phase in Sherrill's career, during which she developed a charming country style. "I love to work in the moment, and this style of design really speaks to that," Sherrill says. "It's rooted in traditional decorating, but there is always an unexpected twist to soften things up." That twist, according to Sherrill, is "anything that takes the seriousness out of the room--a sisal carpet, whimsical accessories, unusual finishes, or a wild splash of color," she explains. "It's about using contrast in a subtle way, pairing clean lines with sensuous ones, or mixing painted furniture with formal antiques. It's about trusting your eye and being willing to take more risks."
