鲍尔斯和西德豪斯编著的《会话分析与专门用途语言(第2版)》的系列文章源自国际应用语言学学会于2005年在意大利贝加莫大学召开的“专门话语的新趋势”国际研讨会上“会话分析和专门用途语言”专题讨论会的发言。该专题讨论会的主要目的就是挖掘会话分析学派和专门用途语言研究之间的关联。

本书共分会话分析方法与专门用途语言研究、特定领域中的会话分析和专门用途语言研究、会话分析和专门用途语言教学三个部分。这一系列论文反映了将会话分析方法应用于应用语言学研究的趋势。书中的每一部分在某种程度上都采用了“通过描写来指引行动”这样的视角，每位作者都采用了复杂的分析方法：在分析每个对话的价值的同时，考察其结果与专门用途语言教学的关联。
