Jacobus Kloppenburg (1930), a native of Amsterdam, reflects the ideal of the homo universalis as an artist, designer, and musician, as a man of many talents and profound learning. As a friend of Joseph Beuys's,his works are found at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, but perhaps the greatest attention must be turned to his Artchive for the Future Trashtethical Litterarture project. This completely unique archive was located in Kloppenburg's Amsterdam studio.

Over the course of several decades it grew into a Gesamtkunstwerk of fascinat ing proportions. Despite massive protests, this bizarre construction made up of objets trouves, furniture and images became the victim of renovation measures in the late 1990s and since then is threatened to be destroyed. With this publication, important documents on the contemporary development of a highly unusual artist have been preserved and made available to the public. They also witness the conflict with the City of Amsterdam and show a cross section of his work ranging from his early paintings through photo collages all the way to the rooms he created.
