◎简　　介　

　　本片描写的是罗马帝国逐步走向灭亡的过程。罗马皇帝卡斯奥里路（安东尼·奎尔饰），晚年时决定将王位传给贤臣利比亚斯（斯蒂芬·博伊德饰），而不是传给王子康莫德斯（亚力克·吉尼斯饰），因而被毒死。利比亚斯并没有作罗马的皇帝，而是辅佐自己的好友康莫德斯登上皇位，但却引来皇帝的忌恨，于是派他去守边疆。新皇帝登位，治国无术，残暴不仁，因为增税问题引起各联邦群的反抗，而带头的正是姐姐露西拉公主。新皇帝派遣利比亚斯去征讨，利比亚斯面对着爱人，却依旧选择了忠君。但是皇帝却抓住了他与公主，准备烧死他们。利比亚斯最后终于杀死了这个昏君，带着公主远离皇室而去。自此，罗马帝国逐渐走向灭亡。
