长期以来，衡量翻译作品好坏的标准一直被囿于是否能让译文在各个方面与原文实现对等这一框架内。这种衡量模式过于注重原文和作者在翻译过程中的作用，对于译者、目的语读者和译文没有足够重视，忽略了译者本身的主动性和创造性，对于影响译文成败和效果的目的语文化社会因素也多有疏忽。
为了亲身体会译者在翻译过程中的地位和作用，作者不但将研究对象选定为澳大利亚著名华裔作家布莱恩·卡斯特罗和他的小说Stepper，而且自己把英文原版小说翻译为汉语，以求最大程度上实现译者的价值和功能翻译理论的指导意义，并且充分利用本书所提出的十维翻译补偿理论与方法，最终确保汉语译本能兼顾原作作者和译文读者的意图与需要。
