In this exhibition we are presented with the work of an artist who created a vast body of work in relative isolation, secluded not merely by his auditory impairment but also by his rural environment. Placed within the context of the Reina Sofia's collection, James Casde's oeuvre begins to reveal its complex, multivalent meanings. For the viewer, it is tempting to seek underlying connections between Castle's work and that of his contemporaries--parallels with Pop Art and the use of found materials in historical avant-garde production, for example--but what allies him most closely with the history of modern and contemporary art is his persistent search for modes of expression that would reflect his singular artistic sensibility.
