The Sherlock Holmes stories stretch from the 1880s to the 1920s.but the two volumes here in one are quite close together in dates of composition, the Hound in 1902 and the Return in 1905.This places them right at the end of Victoria’s reign and the tensions in the society and philosophies of that particular time can be discerned within the relatively narrow formulaic limits of the detective story.
After Sherlock Holmes" apparently fatal encounterwith the sinister Professor Moriarty at theReichenbach Falls, the great detective reappears,to the delight of the faithful Dr Watson in The Adventure of the Empty House. This follows the celebrated full-length The Hound ofthe Baskervilles. The stories are illustrated by SidneyPaget, the finest of illustrators, from whom ourimages of Sherlock Holmes and his world derive. This is the second of three volumes of TheComplete Sherlock Howlmes reproduced from originalcopies of The Strand Magnzine. The three bookspresent all the Holmes stories arrangedchronologically in order of first publication.
