Captains Courageous is sub-titled A Story of the Grand Banks and was first published in 1897. The Grand Banks refer to the rich fishing grounds in the North Atlantic off the coast of Newfoundland. The story begins with the rescue, by the fishing schooner We're Here, owned and under the command of the excellent Captain Disko Troop, of the son of an American millionaire, Harvey Cheyne. ……
Captains Courageous is one of Kipling"s most entrancing tales. Set on the rich fishing grounds of the Grand Banks off Newfoundland, it tells how the motley crew of the fishing schooner We"re Here out of Gloucester, Massachusetts, make a dramatic rescue of a young man. He turns out to be the invertebrate and pampered son of an American millionaire.
The fishermen are unable to return the rescued youth to shore until the end of the fishing season and the story develops into a finely observed account of how his effete and spoilt character is changed by the drastic treannent of the rough but kindly crew.
