侯伯宇潜心于量子场论和数学物理的研究,工作于这些方面的最前沿,在群表示理论、磁单极子、可积场论模型、量子反常、量子群、统计模型和共形场论等方面取得了一系列极为重要的成果,得到了国内外理论物理界的高度评价。他是我国理论物理事业的优秀学术带头人之一,为我国理论物理队伍培养了一大批人才,特别是到西北大学后,对于得到广泛认可的我国理论物理“西北军”的形成,作出了重大贡献,他的学生遍布全国乃至国外。侯伯宇论文选集编委会编著的《侯伯宇论文选集》选编了他的部分论文。在他逝世一周年之际出版这本论文集是很有意义的:一方面,这是他的学术成就和学术风格的记录;另一方面,也将给他的同时代人提供一个永远的纪念,后辈青年也将从中得到教益。
