吴丁娥主编的《英语阅读技巧与实践》第六册为报刊阅读。报刊阅读是英语阅读课中一个重要的组成部分。本册分为三个单元。第一单元介绍了一些英美的主要报刊，以便让学生对英美报刊的历史与现状有一些大致的了解。第二单元简要介绍了一些必不可少的读报知识。以上两个单元既可在课堂上讲授，也可让学生自己在课后阅读。第三单元为报刊阅读实践，它是该册的重点。我们在选材时注意了其广泛性，文章既有政治、社会、军事、外交、经济、科技方面的内容，又有文化与体育方面的内容；既有选自英美报刊上的文章，又有少量中国（含香港）英文报刊上的文章。练习中既有表层的正误判断题，又有深层的问答题和讨论题，但其重点在后者。教师可以根据课文后的讨论题组织学生就国内外重大的政治、社会、军事、外交、经济、科技、文化、体育事件等内容展开讨论，这样，不但可以提高学生的分析和解决问题的能力，而且可以促使他们不断提高英语口语水平。
