Lucian Freud is a painter of the body at rest. He is, as he likes to remind people, a biologist. He paints, draws and etches heads and bodies - predominantly the human kind, but frequently the animal kind. His interest is in truth-telling. But he brings to this apparently straightforward purpose an extraordinary sensitivity to what is involved in occupying a body: the sensation, the emotion, the intelligence, the bloom, the inevitable dissipation.
