本书以“一流作家一流作品”这一原则精选作家及其作品。如浪漫主义诗人只选华兹华斯、柯勒律治、拜伦、雪莱及济慈五位，这样可以选取他们更多的诗作，以加深学生对这五位诗坛巨匠及其经典诗作的认识。同时，还注意选取国内同类教材尚未包括、但在文学界具有重大影响的材料，如华兹华斯的《抒情歌谣集》再版序言，以介绍其诗歌理论；济慈的信函，以阐释其“自我否定力”理论；玛丽·雪莱的《弗兰肯斯坦》，以说明该小说的重大社会意义。
