The naturalism which the Hellenes had been unable to combine with beauty, became now allied to ugliness. They depicted old age with its wrinkles and its turgidity, showed withered dryness or obesity, deformity and disease, the stages of the struggle with death, without poesy and with all its repulsive details, its vulgar lack of charm, even when their work had sunk to parody and caricature.
