I willed the ring to carry me in the direction from which I'd come. I passed through the globe without effort and continued away from it, moving toward the hole I'd made in the barrier, buffeted by hurricaneforce winds rushing through the hole into space. I put a bubble around myself, trapping some of the air inside, and then the winds didn't buffet me anymore.
I had no idea how long it had been since I'd started chasing the vanishing planet, nor even any clear idea of how long it had been since I'd left Earth. Years?Days? Tune was becoming elusive and almost meaningess.
The hole in the barrier was enlarging and other holes were appearing. The entire thing was cracking, fragmenting, the pieces drifting into space, pushed by what was left of the Oan atmosphere.
I felt a great weariness. I didn't just want to sleep---I wanted not to be. That was the Oan plan for me, and for everyone else, and I thought, Okay, bring it on.
