　　翠丝（谢琳·伍德蕾 Shailene Woodley 饰）和老四（提奥·詹姆斯 Theo James 饰）的分歧者身份在暴露后，无一例外地遭到了控制着军队和政权的博学派领导人珍宁·马修斯（凯特·温丝莱特 Kate Winslet 饰）的追杀。翠丝的父母为了保护她，被珍宁 控制的无畏派杀害了。
　　翠丝和老四在逃往其它派系寻求庇护的同时，也努力在友好派、诚实派、无私派和无畏派里寻找同盟，以期粉碎珍宁的阴谋，推翻她的统治。与此同时，曾经处于派系体系最底层的无派系阵营大军崛起，成为了反抗珍宁统治不可或缺的力量，而这个阵营的首领竟然是老四本以为已经去世多年的母亲伊芙琳（娜奥米·沃茨 Naomi Watts 饰）。
