　　倒叙，科学家安德烈（大卫·海迪生 David Hedison饰）的美貌妻子海琳（帕特丽夏·欧文斯 Patricia Owens饰）打来电话，向安德烈的弟弟弗朗索瓦（文森特·普莱斯 Vincent Price饰）求助。她向弗朗索瓦和警探坦白，自己刚刚杀害了丈夫安德烈。案发前，安德烈痴迷研发他的时空交错机器，这个机器能够将人体分解传输到另一个地方再重组。可他万万没有想到的是：正在他埋头实验的时候，一只闯进来的丑陋苍蝇飞进了机器……
　　这部由二十世纪福克斯公司于1958年推出的低成本科幻片《苍蝇》，可谓史上经典“变蝇人”的开山鼻祖。二十世纪福克斯公司相继推出1959年的《变蝇人回归》和1965年的《苍蝇的诅咒》。此后“苍蝇热”一发不可收拾，影响了八十年代的同类电影：1986年翻拍的《变蝇人》更加注重恐怖视觉的处理，荣获奥斯卡最佳化妆奖，而在1989年推出《变蝇人2》接力演绎“苍蝇热”。
