本教材取名为《大学课堂实用英语听力》，突出课堂教学的实用性，除了正常的听力练习外，比较侧重学生对大学英语四级和专四的备考需求，兼顾四级考试和专四考试的题型。按照难易程度，共分为4个层级，8个单元，每个单元包含短对话、长对话、填空、短文听力等题型。本书是在编者经过多年听力教学的经验积累，在搜集大量适合大一、大二学生听力水平的资料额基础上编写而成。
