With rapid urbanization and population growth in urban areas, redeveloping urban villages at central urban area would be full of potential. Because of the particular land ownership structure in urban villages, conventional urban redevelopment methods are not suitable for the redevelopment of urban villages, public-private partnerships had been introduced into urban redevelopment to integrate the power and resources of private sector into the process to form a collaboration between public and private sections, and to share the profits and benefits. The book explored the conditions under which partnerships for the redevelopment of urban villages could be established in China by case study of three urban villages in Shenzhen. A research framework has been established by examining the power relations of such partnerships and has been tailored to the scenario of redevelopment of urban villages. The book aimed to be instructive and enlightening for the future redevelopment of rural non-agricultural land in China.

Dr. Li Xin is an assistant professor at the Department of Urban Planning, South China University of Technology (SCUT). She holds a B.S. of Urban and Regional Planning and an M.S. of Human Geography, both awarded by Peking University. She was awarded her Ph.D. by the University of Hong Kong for her work on partnership of urban renewal in Shenzhen, China. She has worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Peking University from 2009-2013 before joined SCUT. She has a wide range of research interests in social and economic aspects of land use policy, more specifically in the areas of land readjustment in urban China, institution change of land system in urban renewal, and urban villages. Dr. Li has won a shared First Prize of National Science & Technology Awards of Ministry of Land & Resources of China in 2007.
