法国概况课是高等院校法语专业学生的必修课，主要讲授法国的地理、历史、政治、经济、教育、社会生活与文化传统，以提高学生对文化差异的敏感性、宽容性和处理文化差异的灵活性，从而培养学生跨文化交际的能力。它的第一个作用是吸引学生对法语所属的文化感兴趣，对法国产生好奇；第二个作用是有助于法语学习者与法国人之间的沟通，避免文化知识成为交际行为的障碍。

全书按主题分为18章(每章以4到6课时为宜)，每章由法文正文、词汇与练习几个部分组成。全书文章框架清晰，知识点明确。课后练习灵活，趣味性强，部分练习内容在考察教材内容的基础上对本章相关知识进行扩充。为方便学生阅读理解，正文的法文均配有中文译文，收在全书的第二部分。另外，本书附赠CD-ROM光盘一张，供多媒体学习使用。
