The impossible is the genuine subject of art. The painter attempting to visualize the invisible, the writer attempting to invoke the presence of the past, the dancer attempting to fly, they all face up to this challenge. The latter example, though, may be likely to prompt the ostensibly prag-matic view that the subject of art is creating illusions. But this would mean neglecting the fact that illusion is not the impossible; it is make-believe. The impossible in art, however, is the truth of philosophy - something that is not yet here, at least not for all of us to see, but which artists already anticipate, giving it imaginative shape so as to make it come real.
"Zaha Hadid. Architecture" is published on the occasion of the eponymous personal exhibition shown at the MAK, Vienna. The bilingual volume - German and English - for the first time documents Hadid"s most recent projects and gives a comprehensive survey of the oeuvre of one of the most renowned proponents of seminal contemporary architecture. The publication features numerous, mostly colored illustrations, including design drawings, models and - hitherto largely unpublished -"major pant"ngs" by Zaha Hadid, as well as photographs of projects built or under construction, providing a fundamental insight into all stages of the project development, from the abstract concept to the blueprint and its constru tional implementation. One special feature of this publication is the documentation of the "Ice-Storm" installation developed especially, for the MAK exhibition - a "spatial experiment" covering a floor space of 300 m2 with eight tons in weight and seven mettrs in height that provides the public with an opportunity to get an active feel for Hadid s radically new language of shape and space. With contributions by Peter Noever, Patrik Schumacher, and Andreas Ruby."
