Gustav Klimt’s landscape paintings bring to light a lesser known aspect of the artist’s oeuvre, proving that his mastery’ extends beyond renowned portraits of Viennese society to evocative depictions of nature. Over a period of many years, Klimt regularly staved in the Salzkammergut re.Lion in Austria, occasionally traveling across the border to Italy. During the summer months, the artist sought to capture the beauty and charm of nature, taking advantage of the light and the brilliant colors found in the mountainous countryside. Klimt experimented with composition and style in his landscapes, and many of these are considered his most exquisite works. Although few in number, these paintings are made even more precious by their scarcity. Gustay Klimt: Landscapes brings together all known landscape paintings by the artist, traces his excursions to Lake Atter and Lake Garda, reveals the influence he had on his contemporaries, and underlines his valuable contribution to the school of European landscape painting.
