On the occasion of the 125th anniversary of Franz Marc's birth in 2005 and the 90th anniversary of his death in 2006, the St~dtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus is putting on the most comprehensive exhibition to date of the work of this out-standing, charismatic Blaue Reiter artist and important representative of German Expressionism. In this respect, the present retrospective even surpasses the legend-ary memorial exhibition held in Munich in 1916 and, at the same time, follows on from the last Franz Marc retrospective in 1980, likewise at the Lenbachhaus.Because of the very fortunate situation with regard to loans, our exhibition brings together nearly one hundred paintings, constituting roughly half of Marc's sur-viving painted oeuvre, plus a wealth of outstanding works on paper. This makes it possible to gain an overview of Marc's work that is both comprehensive and transparent.
