本书的编写与修订，仍坚持以英语教育专业英语教学大纲为指针，力求科学、准确、简明、实用。然而它并未沿袭一般英语语音书的套路，而是从实际出发，依据简明实用的编写原则，从语音的三要素(节奏、语调、发音)，扼要阐述英语语音学的基本理论，力求重点突出，要言不繁。

本书每一单元之后，配有单项和综合的习题。相信学生在教师的指导下，通过“语流”的训练，切实打好语音功底以达到提高中学英语师资的语音素养，进而提高其英语交际水平的目的。

英语语音语调的正误、优劣日益成为口语交际的焦点，也与英语口语的流利程度休戚相关。英语语音学日显其重要性。本书初版以来，以其道理讲解简明、技能得以强化为特色，赢得广大师生的厚爱。本书历年重印，近年广泛用作高等师范院校教材，也用作非师范类院校教材，更被列为英语自学考试参考用书。本书是在1991年11月第一版《英语语音学》的基础上修订改编而成。修订后的本教材，以更为实用、更见实效的内在质量，为21世纪的英语教学效力。因为它：保持原有特色；随书供应由华东师范大学翁贤青教授和张晴讲师录音的练习题的盒式音带三盒，语音纯正，音质清晰，以资模仿；增设“正音要领”(Advice to Teacher and students)；增加了习题量。
