◎简　　介
　　建筑设计师道格（保罗?纽曼 Paul Newman 饰）在自己设计的旧金山摩天大楼竣工之际，希望抛开工作，开始计划已久的远行，然而此时，主仓库传来了报警信号，在大楼指挥中心哈里协助下，道格查明保险终端柜没有绝缘保护，而整栋大楼的电路都远没有达到自己的设计要求。大楼建筑商邓肯和女婿罗杰为了节省建筑成本，降低了大楼防火规格。邓肯和一班各界名流齐聚于135层的舞厅庆祝大楼落成，电路系统不堪负荷终于引发明火，道格和前来灭火的消防队长迈克（史蒂夫?麦奎因 Steve McQueen 饰）力劝邓肯疏散人群。消防设施不完善的摩天楼火势很快难以控制，道格、哈里以及迈克的消防队员们各尽所能救援人群，但汹涌的大火，似乎要吞噬一切……
