本书既是对中国经济国际化历程的分析和总结，也是对中国道路的考察和思考。本书沿着两条主线（一条是鸦片战争以来，尤其是新中国成立前资本主义的发展与不发展，另一条是二十世纪以来，尤其是新中国成立至今社会主义的探索与发展），勾勒出中国经济国际化的整体景象，总结出只有中国特色社会主义道路才能有力地推进中国经济国际化的结论。在内容上，本书对改革开放以来，尤其是十八大以来的情况进行了详细的分析，并得出中国经济国际化已经进入全面推进的阶段。在结构上，本书按照思想史一政策史一经济史的框架，即先对某一时期的相关经济思想进行总结，再对政策制定和制度改革加以分析，最后则是对经济国际化的成果进行归纳。
