本书分析了“日本主义”如何通过影响西方公众的认知模式来建构西方公众对于日本巡演剧团的个人与艺术形象的文化想象。在此历史语境分析的基础上，本书转入了对西方公众之于日本巡演剧团的舞台作品的接受的探讨，分析了西方公众如何认知与评价日本巡演剧团的舞台作品在演员个人演技和整体演出风格两个层面上所具有的种种特征。本书进一步考察了日本巡演剧团和各种与其海外巡演活动有关联的西方人之间的权力博弈关系，分析了这种权力关系如何影响日本巡演剧团采取种种演出与官传策略来回应西方人的接受美学习惯的问题。最后，本书探讨了日本巡演剧团在西方的接受过程中遭遇到的跨文化戏剧交流中的“误读”问题，考察一些西方先锋戏剧人在日本巡演剧团的舞台演出风格特征和艺术身份合法性等问题上的接受立场与态度中的“误读性”特征以及这种“误读性”的积极效应。本书适合日本艺术与文化、日本戏剧、西方戏剧爱好者与研究者，以及东西方戏剧比较研究者跨文化交流研究者阅读。
