廊桥是一种优选性的文化现象，中国廊桥自汉代肇始，传承至民国，绵延2000多年，积淀形成宏大的建筑景观、人文景观和历史景观，更引来世界的关注。作者通过18年实地踏勘，考察记录了460余座廊桥（占全国现存廊桥总数的二分之一），跨越了除新疆、宁夏、内蒙古、东三省、西藏西南部以外所有主要山脉及山岭峡谷，长江、黄河、珠江等大水系及其支流，遍及中国二十个省市区，涉及国土面积450余万平方公里。依据空间关联性、时间延续性、风格连贯性、文化差异性、民族相融性等方面内容进行归纳梳理，发现万里长城为北方截止线，珠穆朗玛峰为西方截止线。数千余座廊桥（遗存近千座）具有“大型分布带”特征，它们构成连通华夏广大地域的时空节点，促进了中华文明的发展进化。
