通过认真梳理其迁徙史诗和族谱，参考相关历史文献、考古和民族志资料，《神圣与竞争的景观（西双版纳阿卡人自然资源管理模式变迁）（英文版）》把哈尼族的文化起源地追溯到天山天池和吐鲁番一带。作者王建华认为哈尼族的万物有灵信仰和众生共同体的世界观早在其采集狩猎的远古时期就已经形成。哈尼族先民经历了几千年的往南迁徙史，先后参与了炎帝部落的农业文明、古蜀国文明、古夜郎国文明和古滇国文明，最后在元江流域形成了自己的加滇地方政权，从事水稻农业。作者认为阿卡支系的形成与加滇政权有密切关系，而加滇政权被元朝蒙古军所灭直接导致阿卡人的主体从元江流域往南迁徙到澜沧江—湄公河流域，成为该地区一个主要的山地民族群体，从事以种植旱稻为主的轮歇农业，并用其在加滇时期形成的传统民族法典“昂桑活”管理其神圣的景观。中华人民共和国成立以后，其神圣景观与国家的生产和管控导向的景观发生了互动，导致其向市场经济转型，并以种植橡胶、茶叶等长期经济作物为主。本书分析了自然资源管理模式的变迁对阿卡人社会经济和文化及其生态环境所产生的影响。最后讨论了影响可持续发展的因素。

王建华（茑比阿育），1973年2月16日生，哈尼族，2013年获美国加州大学人类学博士学位，现就职于云南民族大学云南省民族研究所，主要从事东南亚和中国西南地区的民族生态学、文化生态学、自然资源管理与可持续发展以及哈尼族的历史、文化和语言等方面的研究。在《Policy Matters》（政策问题）、《生态学杂志》等国内外核心刊物发表论文7篇。
