在祁大晟编写《石油工程专业英语应用(石油高等教育十一五规划教材)》中的英语科技文章皆精选自原版英文资料。与一般专业英语教材在课文后列示生词表的作法不同，本书对学生可能陌生的生词、专业术语采用括注中文注释的方式。这样一方面可以节省篇幅，突出主体内容；另一方面可使读者阅读更为方便和流畅，达到趣味盎然的阅读效果。书中所涉及的专业知识都是基础性的，不会因为专业知识的难度而影响学生的学习兴趣，但这些专业知识也不应当是科普类型的，而这正是当前一些专业英语教材的不足之处。本书编著者认为科普文章与真正的专业论文差距较大，不能完全满足专业英语教学的要求。另外需要说明的是，本书目录中标有符号*者为编著者特别推介的，文风简洁优美、表述规范的文章，可作为英语科技论文写作学习模仿的范文。
