In 1906 Gris moved to Paris and settled in the Bateau-Lavoir, where Picasso was living.There he met other artists and poets such as Apollinaire, Max Jacob and Andre Salmon. Gris worked as an illustrator part of the time and as a painter the rest. His first works as an artist were watercolors on paper. Later he began to produce oils on canvas.
