This book grew out of an article I wrote in 1972 for American Artist magazine entitled The Sculpture of Bruno Lucchesi. In it I described briefly some of the techniques Lucchesi uses in making his terracottas. The reaction was a somewhat incredulous, You mean it's that easy? People couldn't believe that such a basic simplicity of means produced such spectacular results.
Terracotta is one of the fastest, most direct, and inexpensive mediums available to the sculptor.Since the Renaissance, terracotta has been a favorite material for sculptors' small working models because, being fired not cast, it can be modeled with an enormous degree of freedom and inventiveness. Bruno Lucchesi, the undisputed master of terracotta techniques, shows you how to work with this medium, from modeling the human form, to firing and finishing.
