In Mexico, Toledo's reputation begins with his exceptional stature as an artist, and at times, reaches the level of national debate, whereas in Europe he is an outsider, admired mainly by those who have spent time in Oaxaca and Mexico City. His aversion to exhibiting as well as to self-promotion has meant that younger generations know Toledo (born 194O) by the very few examples in museum collections and by reproduction. By beginning with a brief account of the genesis of this exhibition, we wish to make clear how important were the many contributions of those who have helped with its realisation. And in turn to indicate the esteem and affection that is directed towards Toledo and his art.
