THE SUNDIAL BRIDGE carries bicycles and pedestrians across the Sacramento River in the Turtle Bay Exploration Park, Redding, California. Unlike many bridges, which support the span from a symmetric structure, the Sundial Bridge has a single tower at one end, which supports the span with cables. The tower is shown in a close-up view on the cover and the entire bridge is shown in this photograph. This structure must resist forces from gravity and the wind that attempt to bend, twist, or topple the tower. The shadow cast by the tower serves as a sundial that provides the correct time on one day of the year, the day of the summer solstice. The shadow of the tower moves across hour markers on the ground at approximately one foot per minute, so the rotation of the earth is easily observable.
