本套教材分为水手业务与值班、水手工艺、水手英语、机工业务与值班、金工工艺、机工英语等共六本，教学内容相对集中，方便学员学习、使用，也方便船员自学、参考。

本书适用于水手、机工适任培训英语教材，也可供技工学校轮机工专业的学生和船上轮机部普通船员自学提高使用。

本书是根据“全国海船水手机工适任培训教材编写工作会议”的要求编写的系列教材之一，共分上下两篇，每篇各十个单元。上篇为机工英语评估，下篇为机工英语阅读。课文内容结合船上实际、实用简明，部分课文还配有插图。每个单元分课文、生词、课文注释、练习、阅读材料等。
