The Collection is dominated by Venetian Renaissance and Flemish works, both emanating largely from Archduke Leopold Wilhelm during his period as Governor of the Spanish Netherlands in addition to paintings he purchased from English collections following the fall of the English monarchy at the end of the English Civil War.
Works by the 16th-century masters Giorgione, Titian,Tintoretto and Veronese, the German Renaissance painters Diirer, Cranach and Holbein, the Baroque Italians such as Caravaggio and Bellotto, are matched only by one of the greatest Rubens Collection in the world and the epitome of Early Netherlandish painting as represented by the Pieter Bruegel Collection.
Dr Wolfgang Prohaska is Curator of the Paintings Collection (Gemaldegalerie) at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
