Since the exhibition of his works at the Venice Biennal and Documental1, Luc Tuymans has been internationally recognized as one of the most distinguished painters of his generation. The Belgian artist has, since the end of the 1980s,developed an extraordinarily complex body of work. With a gift that possesses a special connection to drawing, Tuymans works from material already filtered by various media to create silent images of landscape details, objects, architectures, and often masklike human figures.

This publication offers a representative selection of his paintings, film stills, Polaroids, and works on paper, and presents the recent series Slide (2002) and Exhibit (2002). They are framed by two important sets of images: the cycle Die Zeit (1988),which thematizes the Nazi genocide, and the series The Passion (1998-99), in which Tuymans raises the question of the substantive core of religiosity.
