Late nineteenth-century France witnessed the flowering of a school of painting which, although initially derided, is now probably the best known and most loved in the entire history of art. The group of painters who became known as the Impressionists, rejecting the traditional, old-fashioned and esta blished standards set by the Ecole des Beaux Arts, began the process of turning the world of art and aesthetics on its head which continued until the emergence of a school of truly modern painters by the end of the century. Artists such as Edouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro and Pierre-Auguste Renoir each in their own way contributed to a change in technique, subject matter and handling that paved the way for a new understanding of art and its aims.
