本书是《华时代大学英语综合教程学生用书4》的配套用书，练习设计形式多样，旨在强化学生的单元词汇理解、篇章理解以及翻译、写作能力。
《自主练习4》共有6个单元，每单元包括以下主要内容：
第一部分为Vocabulary and Structure，包括词汇匹配、选择同义词以及短语填空。这三个大题的单词和短语均选自《综合教程学生用书4》A篇、B篇中大纲要求掌握的核心词汇和短语。
第二部分为Reading Comprehension，包括篇章层次词汇理解、雅思阅读理解、托福阅读理解以及传统的大学英语四级考试阅读理解。以上阅读题型基于单元主题和词汇而设计，旨在加强学生对单元重点词汇的掌握并提升其整体阅读理解能力。
第三部分为Translation，包括英译汉(句子翻译)、汉译英(句子翻译)以及段落翻译。英译汉基于单元主题词汇设计，汉译英和段落翻译基于与单元主题相关的中国文化内容而设计，旨在提升学生用英语表达中国文化的能力。
第四部分为writing，为大学英语四级考试写作题型。要求学生根据提纲，写一篇120字左右的短文，与单元主题和《综合教程学生用书4》中的写作专项内容相关。此部分的写作主题参考了大学英语四、六级考试的主题，练习具有针对性。
本书最后提供所有练习的参考答案，答案部分提供了传统阅读理解题的答案详解以及作文范文，供教师和学生参考使用。
