　　重刑犯艾伯特·刚茨在他的老搭档比利·拜尔的帮助下成功越狱，他们立即杀死了自己的同伙亨利·王，用假名字住进了三藩市的瓦尔登旅馆。年轻干探杰克·盖茨（Nick Nolte饰）郁不得志，酗酒成性。此番受命与同事VanZant 和Algren入住瓦尔登旅馆，调查名叫G. P. Polson的人，不想VanZant 和Algren被艾伯特所害。杰克欲为同事报仇，劝服上司Haden让他独立办案。杰克到监狱探视艾伯特从前的搭档雷吉·汉蒙德（Eddie Murphy饰），以减刑为由，希望雷吉帮助他抓捕艾伯特和比利，雷吉勉强答应，但杰克只能将其带出监狱48小时，更糟的是二人之间发生了争执并在垃圾填埋场大打出手。原来，雷吉在垃圾场停有一车，车上有他入狱前存的500000美元。现在，艾伯特绑架了知道车的位置的同伙路德的女友，逼路德将车找出。雷吉得知此事，为赶在返回监狱前保住那笔钱，不得不与杰克捐弃前嫌，协力追捕艾伯特……
