China Foundation for International Studies (CFIS),established in Beijing in May 1999, is a national organization with legal person status under the administration of the Chinese Foreign Ministry. Its members are mainly senior diplomats, renowned experts and scholars on international studies as well as entrepreneurs of China.
As one of the most influential non-governmental think tanks in China, the Foundation serves as an important platform for studies on international issues and foreign policy. Its objectives are to enhance Chinese scholars and economists' interest as well as foresighted and strategic studies on major international issues,promote academic exchanges and economic and cultural cooperation with research institutions both at home and abroad, and provide necessary political and economic information and policy consultation to Chinese companies interested in entering the international markets.
The fund of the Foundation comes mainly from donations by Chinese companies, institutions, social organizations, entrepreneurs and friendly personages.
The fund is mainly used to patronize research on major international topics by the Chinese academia,sponsor seminars held in China on major international issues, finance bilateral and multilateral communication and cooperation between Chinese institutions on international studies an their foreign counterparts,support Chinese academia to publish books and journals on international issues, and hold other activities conducive to promoting international studies.
With its headquarters in Beijing, the Foundation has an Executive Council consisting of chairman, vice chairman, advisers and councilmen, which assumes the supreme authority. The Foundation sets up an Academic Committee with several affiliated Research Centers, a Public Relations Committee with an External Communication and Cooperation Center attached, a Secretariat, and a Finance Department.
The current chairman of the Executive Council is Zhang Deguang, former vice foreign minister and the first secretary general of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
