针对全国范围内持续增长的自学英语热的需要，尤其是针对中级水平的职称考试的需要，征得许国璋教授同意，特将许国璋主编的《英语》（一、二册），并征得南京大学外国语学院英语系罗长炎教授同意，将其与邢文军博士编著的（许国璋主编《英语》）《自学辅导》一并加以印行，与全国学习者见面。

许编《英语》的第一册从零起点开始，到第二册止共有正副57篇课文。60项语法，377个练习，约2500个单词。初学者在一年左右时间内学完，掌握听说读写技能，打好英语基本功，这在几十年教学实践中证明是可以做到的。
