肯尼思·格雷厄姆(1859.1932)是英国的银行家.他于1908年创作了《柳林风声》。《柳林风声》源于格雷厄姆给他的独生子阿拉斯泰尔讲述的动物故事,阿拉斯泰尔非常喜欢,于是父亲答应在他去夏令营的时候写信给他继续讲这个故事。这本书的创作源泉是作者的童年记忆。格雷厄姆的母亲在他小的时候就去世了,他和外祖母生活在一起。外祖母家有一座很大的宅院,他在这座大宅院以及乡野河畔问度过了童年时光。他小时候流连的田野风光,后来成为《柳林风声》中鼹鼠、河鼠、獾与癞蛤蟆先生结伴畅游的世界。

起初《柳林风声》并不是很受欢迎,直到罗斯福总统读了这本书,对

它赞不绝口,认为这是一部了不起的作品。此后越来越多的人开始读这

本书,并觉得它很有趣。《小熊维尼》的作者艾伦·亚历山大·米尔恩还把这本书改编成了很受欢迎的戏剧。

"No, no, no. You must all come home with me andhave lunch at Toad Hall. My lunches are famous."

"I have to go now," Badger said. "I have thingsto do."

He walked slowly away, shaking his head.

"Famous lunches!" he said under his breath. "Whata bunch of nonsense."

"Isn't Mr. Badger feeling well?" Rat said.

"Oh, he's like that sometimes. Pass the sandwiches,will you?" Toad said, forgetting that he'd invited Moleand Rat to have lunch at Toad Hall.

The friends ate their picnic.

Then Toad said, "Why don't you both come andstay with me at Toad Hall? There are a lot of rooms.We could have a lot of fun."

"We'll visit you one afternoon," Rat said.

"No, no. Come today." Toad said. "You'd like todo that, wouldn't you, Mole?"

"Oh, yes," Mole said. "Thank you very much."

"Mole is staying with me, Toad," Rat said. "I'mgoing to teach him all about the river. Aren't I, Mole?"

"What? Oh, yes. Yes, of course," Mole said. "ButI'd like to see Toad Hall."

"And so you shall," Toad said, taking the lastsandwich. Then he asked Rat, "Have you seen anyWild Wooders recently?"

"Who are the Wild Wooders?" Mole asked.

"Animals who live in the Wild Wood," Toad said."The rabbits are all right, but as for the others.., youdon't want to have anything to do with them."

Rat said, "The weasels are the worst. You can'ttrust them. I never go into the Wild Wood."

"And I never, ever invite them to Toad Hall," Toadsaid, finishing the last sandwich.

He looked at the empty picnic basket.

"Is there anything else to eat?" he asked.

"No, Toad," Rat said. "You've eaten everything."

"Then I'll be off to Toad Hall and one of my famouslunches."

As Toad said this, Alfred the horse arrived, pullinga brightly painted caravan.

"Ah, here's my beautiful caravan," Toad said. "Forgetboats and the river, Mole. Travel the world in a caravan.Come inside. I have everything anyone could need."

"It is rather beautiful," Mole said.

"Come on my travels with me," Toad said. "We'llhave such fun."

"What do you think, Rat?" Mole asked.

Rat thought for a moment. Then he said, "We'dbetter go with him. We can't trust him, since he isfoolish sometimes."

"Nonsense," said Toad. "I'm a famous traveler.Jump on and we'll be off."

Toad, Rat, and Mole jumped into a seat at the frontof the caravan.  "Off you go, Alfred," Toad called to the horse.

Alfred shook his head sadly, just like Badger. "There'llbe problems," he said. "Whatever Toad does, there arealways problems."

But he put his head down and began to pull. Slowly,the caravan moved away from the river bank.P6-P7
