本书共分五章。第一、二章分别涉及写作中的基本功，即单词和句子。第三章重点讨论写好自然段的技巧。第四章介绍五段体文章的结构。第五章介绍如何用五段体文章的结构写作过程描述、分类、因果关系、比较与对比以及辩论的文章。每一章中的每一小节又大致由四部分组成：概念讲解、范例／范文、练习和参考答案。

本书的文字通顺易懂，范文难易适中，易于模仿，并结合中国学生的特点和常见错误编写了有针对性的练习。适用于大学英语四、六级考试、研究生考试、EPT(WSK)、TOEFL、大学英语专业八级考试和准备赴英语国家攻读学位的人员使用。书中的大部分练习都附有参考答案，可供学生考前自学。本书也可作为英语教师的英语写作辅助教材。
